It’s Time I Quit

For a period of time during my six-year pastorate at Dundee I played golf frequently with Barry Tosh, one of our church members and a math professor at Polk Community College.  We usually played at the Willowbrook Golf course, Winter Haven’s city course.  As a professor at the college Barry could play there without charge—although not free for me.

As is normal for golf courses, if they are exceptionally busy they will combine players.  On one occasion Barry and I were paired up with a couple from Quebec, Canada who were on vacation in Central Florida, and the lady looked to be about eight and a half months pregnant.

The couple played the first nine holes with us, figured their scores and bid their adieus.  I heard them give their scores and realized that they both had beaten me.  I was so disgusted that I said to Barry after they left, “Whenever a pregnant French-Canadian woman can beat me at golf, it’s time I quit the game.”

Barry, the math professor who was very adept at keeping the scores in his head, tried to make me feel better by saying, “She didn’t count all her strokes.”

I was never quite sure if Barry was correct or whether he was just trying to make his pastor feel better!

  1. Barry never mis-reported numbers. Love this story! Still miss the man.
