Out of the thousands of names for churches I think the best come from the scriptures themselves. Certainly throughout the ages spiritually minded people have searched the scriptures to find suitable church names. There is definitely something positive to be said for churches which have names based directly on some passage of scripture. Some of the best known ones, of course, are: Church of God, Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, The Brethren, Church of the Nazarene, and Church of God in Christ.
Also many churches have the names of biblical places or
people. This is commendable. I always am appreciative of churches with the
names of biblical places such as Beulah, Bethel, Antioch, Ebenezer, Mt. Pisgah,
etc. Commendable also are those names
from biblical characters such as St. Paul’s, St. James’, St. Peter’s, Mary’s
Chapel, St. Luke’s, etc.
I am thinking of beginning my own church. It will definitely have a scriptural name,
one which is based squarely on the scriptures, and which denotes something
about its adherents. I think I have
found a name in the New Testament that has not yet been used.
Recently in reading the Book of Acts, I came across the
passage in Acts 20:7-12 where Paul is preaching at Troas. A young man was sitting in the third floor
window of the building where Paul was preaching. As Paul’s sermon grew long this young man,
whose name was Eutychus, went to sleep and fell out of the window. Everyone there thought for sure the young man
was dead, but thankfully Paul revived him and went back to his sermon which
lasted until midnight.
I will call my new church “The Eutychus Fellowship” after
the poor young man who went to sleep and fell out of the window while St. Paul
was preaching. This church will not only be scripturally true but also true to life
as experienced in most churches.
“And there sat in a
window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long
preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, …”
Yours for appropriate church names.
