In 1985 when my mother was sixty-seven years old,
she wrote her self-published “book” which was simply a series of real stories
from her life. I have often turned to
its pages to smile again at her memories of growing up in Kentucky, her life on
the farm, and our move to Florida when I was eight years of age. Here is one of her stories that I recently
read again and thought perhaps you would enjoy it too.
This is just a one paragraph excerpt from Mom’s account
about her high school days in Short Creek, KY.
INSIDE OUT
During the time we had been in high school, moral
decay had set in and we had begun to paint and wear lipstick. Stockings were a little prettier than they
had been but were still very hard to get.
Someone had told us that if we turned our cheap stockings wrong side out
they would look more expensive. Sure
enough, .29 cent hose look almost like .59 cent ones. One day, in a careless moment, either
Catherine or I let slip a remark about turning our hose inside out. Immediately, Dad wanted to know what was the “idee”
in that and “what on earth will be next?”
We were ordered in no uncertain terms, we were not to wear our stockings
inside out. Such depravity was not to be
tolerated.
