DURING CAMPAIGN SEASON

As campaign season heats up I cannot help but remember one of my parishioners in our church in Puerto Rico.  One of our members at Calvary church in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, was a middle-aged man who knew how to survive political campaign season in his country.  The Puerto Ricans take seriously their politics and can be quite sensitive—usually there are a few killings during the campaigns.

The three major parties are the Republican Party, the Democrat Party, and the Independence Party.  There are other smaller parties which try to interrupt the campaigns of the larger parties.  There are five or six political parties each of which has its own party flag.

Our friend Mr. Serrano shared with me how he handles the political campaign seasons when things tend to get rough.  He has in his car a flag for each of the parties.  When he sees that he is approaching a political rally happening on the street he grabs the flag of that party and begins waving it out his driver’s window as the crowd cheers him on.  When he gets past the mob he puts that flag down until he needs to pick up a different one to fit the next crowd.

I wasn’t sure whether to attribute his actions to hypocrisy or expediency.  To him, it could have meant life or death!
