While serving as a chaplain at Ft. Riley, Kansas, I had a
chaplain’s assistant for a while who had been a cook for his unit in Viet
Nam. At that time he had been drafted
and sent to that war-torn country. His
first MOS (Military Occupation Specialty) was “cook,” and he worked in his
unit’s mess hall.
He personally told me this story. On many of the desserts they prepared a white
icing which was a favorite with the troops.
However, in the spring of the year the troops began complaining about
the little green bugs that were in the white icing. The little flying insects were about the size
of American gnats. There was not much
that the mess hall personnel could do about the problem since the insects were
small enough to get through the mosquito netting.
After a little thought the head cook came up with the
solution: He began putting green food
coloring in the icing. There were no
more complaints.
